HEIC vs. JPG: which should you actually use?
HEIC is efficient for capture and storage; JPG remains the safer delivery format. Here is how to choose without losing the original.
The practical difference
HEIC is a modern image container commonly produced by Apple devices. It can retain good visual quality at a smaller size than an equivalent JPEG, which makes it useful as a camera-original format.
JPG is older and lossy, but its compatibility is difficult to beat. Browsers, email clients, document tools, printers, content-management systems, and marketplace upload forms generally accept it without an extra conversion step.
Keep HEIC when
Keep the HEIC original when it is your best-quality source and the next tool in your workflow supports it. Converting a lossy image repeatedly cannot restore detail and may introduce new compression artifacts.
- You are archiving camera originals.
- Your editing software supports HEIC reliably.
- Storage efficiency matters more than universal compatibility.
Convert to JPG when
Create a JPG delivery copy when the file needs to leave an Apple-centric workflow. Use the converted copy for sharing, but retain the HEIC source if you may edit or export it again.
- A website, form, or marketplace rejects HEIC uploads.
- Recipients need to open the photo without installing software.
- The image will be embedded in an office document or sent to a print workflow.
A safe workflow
Treat conversion as creating a derivative, not replacing the source. Keep the original, export one JPG at the dimensions and quality the destination needs, inspect fine detail and gradients, and only then distribute the copy.
