Why convert RAR to ISO?
ISO is a plain, uncompressed format — the file will likely be larger than the RAR original, in exchange for maximum compatibility. The main reason to convert RAR to ISO is compatibility: ISO extracts with the archive tool already built into your OS, while RAR doesn't always. If you're sharing a file with someone else, sending it to a tool that expects a specific format, or archiving it for the long term, ISO is usually the safer target.
Format comparison
| RAR | ISO | |
|---|---|---|
| Extension | .rar | .iso |
| MIME type | application/vnd.rar | application/x-iso9660-image |
| Compression | lossless compression | no compression scheme of its own |
| Category | archive | archive |
Common reasons to convert RAR to ISO
- Opening the file on a system whose built-in tool doesn't support RAR
- Matching the archive format a colleague or another tool expects
- Maximizing compatibility with older or stricter tools that expect an uncompressed ISO file
What actually happens to your file
Your RAR archive extracts via UnRAR, then gets rebuilt as a standard ISO 9660 disc image with Rock Ridge and Joliet extensions — the same non-compressing ISO format Convyx uses for every archive-to-ISO conversion. Expect the ISO to be close to your RAR's uncompressed content size, not the compressed RAR size.
Your file, handled carefully
Uploads use TLS in transit and AES-256 SSE-S3 at rest in production (when the production S3 credential gate is enabled), are processed in an isolated job, and deleted on the schedule you choose — as fast as immediately. We don't index, search, or share files between accounts. Read the full security model →
