Why convert TAR to ZIP?

What actually happens to your file
A plain TAR file has no compression of its own — it's just files concatenated together — so packing it into a ZIP, which applies standard DEFLATE compression, typically produces a smaller file than the original TAR. The exception is a TAR whose contents are already compressed (JPEGs, MP4s, etc.), which won't shrink further.
